Fochriw Primary School managed to secure three awards at the Welsh Heritage Schools Initiative competition.

The William Menelaus Prize for best project on industrial heritage was received with an award of £500. Pupils in Year 3 and 4 in Dosbarth Merthyr Town carried out an enquiry based approach to discover more about the ‘lost’ village of Penybanc in the Darran Valley. The school worked in partnership with Caerphilly Library Service who supported with a wide range of information and evidence helping bring their studies to life.

  • Caerphilly Schools design Snoopy Sculptures in aid of Dog's Trust

A number of schools across Caerphilly county borough have been designing their very own Snoopy Sculptures as part of ‘A Dog’s Trail’ in aid of Dogs Trust.

A Dog’s Trail is a special event that will promote health and wellbeing, bring businesses and communities together and help boost the regional economy. The trail’s aim is to raise significant funding for Dogs Trust so that they can continue to provide their services for those who need them the most. The event is presented by Dogs Trust in partnership with Wild in Art.

Dogs Trust offered a learning programme to schools and youth organisations in Cardiff, Caerphilly and Bridgend areas; encouraging pupils to get involved by adopting and designing their very own Snoopy sculptures. The ‘pawsome’ sculptures will be displayed inside venues across the localities, to be enjoyed by both their creators and the wider public.

Driven by a love of animals, especially dogs, Bryn Awel and Fochriw Primary School were thrilled to take part in the project. At each school the project is led by the enterprising creative pupils; the school council at Bryn Awel Primary and the Eco Committee at Fochriw Primary School.

Taking responsibility by rising to the ‘Snoopy challenge’, the pupils shared information launching a whole school competition to design Snoopy. The pupil voice groups received many ‘snooptastic’ entries across the school which was a great opportunity for pupils to work with their families and promote the project. The school council and Eco Committee respectively judged the designs and set to work on their masterpieces with a member of staff guiding the process.

Whilst working on the designs, the pupils grew fond of ‘their Snoopy’ and wanted to mark the sculpture’s uniqueness by naming him. At Bryn Awel Primary School the school council chose ‘Dewi the Diversity Dog,’ to celebrate the sculpture’s story of equality, diversity and acceptance.

“During the pandemic we feel it is important to bring joy and happiness to everyone through colour and positivity and celebrate diversity.” - Bryn Awel School Council 2022.

At Fochriw Primary School the Eco Committee based their design upon many entries showing pride in the local area. They pursued this theme further after being inspired through tree planting in the autumn term at Parc Cwm Darran. Being Caerphilly’s only rural school, the sculpture encompasses the beauty of the Darran Valley, the school’s location.

“Be respectful and responsible and enjoy the area you live in so it is beautiful for humans and animals now and in the future.” – Fochriw Eco Committee 2022

Sharon Pascoe, Head Teacher of Bryn Awel and Fochriw Primary School said, “The project is a magical opportunity to celebrate each school’s ingenuity driven by our enterprising creative pupils whilst supporting a good cause. It is an honour to have our Snoopy sculptures, ‘Dewi the Diversity Dog,’ and ‘Darran the Darran Valley Dog,’ displayed in ‘A Dogs Trail’ for a wider audience to enjoy as we have!”

Cllr Ross Whiting, Cabinet Member for Learning commented, “I am delighted that the pupils are having so much fun designing their Snoopy Sculptures. Their contributions are helping a great cause and I cannot wait to see the sculptures displayed in ‘A Dogs Trail’.

    Sun 27 Jun 2021 CCBC

Pupils and staff at Fochriw Primary School are celebrating after being named the Regional Winners in the ‘Better Energy School Awards’.

The project ‘From Tragedy to Triumph with Fochriw’s Green Hand Gang’ was named the best entry in the ‘Totally Active’ award category for schools across Wales and Western England.

The Better Energy School Awards is a nationwide competition for 5-11 year olds, which is run by the Young People’s Trust for the Environment (YPTE) in partnership with Total. The competition, which aims to generate interest in the environment and raise awareness of the need for sustainable energy sources, has received entries from 370,000 children since it began in 2007.

The school’s curriculum development and design used an innovative approach taking meaningful learning experiences from the vandalism and destruction that happened within the school grounds back in January 2020 into a strategically planned programme of work. ‘From Tragedy to Triumph with Fochriw’s Green Hand Gang’ highlights collaboration with careful cross-disciplinary planning, learning and teaching leading to successful outcomes. The children re-designed their school grounds working with Keep Wales Tidy to implement £10,000 Postcode Lottery funding. Each class across the school took part in challenges and problem solving applying their literacy, numeracy and digital skills in a real life context to bring about positive change. The children were active citizens planting hedgerow in the school grounds working with the Common Connection Ranger. The Eco Warriors showed pride in their community taking part in a successful litterless clean-up campaign in the school grounds and village. The poly tunnel was repaired with support from the school’s PTA, ‘The Friends of Fochriw Primary.’ They launched a successful fundraising campaign and the children were able to plant and enjoy their grounds once again!

The school will be presented with a certificate of excellence in environmental education and £500 to recognise their achievements. Praising the schools efforts, Peter Littlewood, Director of the Young People’s Trust for the Environment said, “We have been really impressed with the great environmental work being done in challenging times.”

Mrs Pascoe, Head Teacher of Fochriw Primary commented, “We are delighted that once again our efforts at Fochriw Primary School to share our vision and aspirations for our pupils to be ethical, informed, citizens has been recognised. We set high expectations for excellence in our environmental work promoting authentic opportunities for experiences, knowledge and skills; we are proud because this award celebrates this. This feel-good story turning tragedy to triumph overcoming the destruction that happened shows the resilience of our whole school community. I’d like to thank everyone who helped contribute to our success we couldn’t have done it without the team effort!”

Cllr Ross Whiting, Cabinet Member for Learning added, “We are all extremely proud of Fochriw Primary School here at Caerphilly Council. They have overcome a devastating challenge and in doing so, have created something beautiful within their school grounds.”

  • High Sheriff Special Recognition Award

    Fri 26 Mar 2021

We are very pleased to receive this award for providing excellent teaching provision during exceptional circumstances.

It has been a challenging year for all school staff but we found new ways to reach out our young learners at home in what has also been a challenging time for them.

  • Super Sixth Science Week at Fochriw Primary School

    Fri 26 Mar 2021 CCBC

Fochriw Primary School recently marked the sixth annual British Science Week, a celebration of everything that is science.

The week was strategically planned with curriculum design focusing on ambitious capable learners with fun and innovation at the heart of the provision.  It needed careful consideration with Foundation Phase children and children at the 'Hub' on site and the remainder of children working at home.  Rising to the challenge, the school put on an incredible feast of 'Scientific Superness' so the children did not miss out on the annual event.

British Science Week kick started with a science show from 'Scientific Sue', a virtual supermarket science experience.  An exciting week unfolded with practical problem solving, participation in the Crest Awards, a virtual trip to a Water Treatment Works and a wealth of virtual visitors. The visitors who inspired the young scientists at Fochriw Primary School included a doctor, Xbox engineer, a cyber security expert and medical researcher at the cutting edge of Coronavirus vaccine research!

Miss Johns, Science Lead Teacher at Fochriw Primary School said "The children enjoyed the challenges British Science Week brought.  Although it has been slightly different this year, it has nonetheless been deemed a great success.  The focus of questioning and problem solving ensures our young scientists are nurtured from an early age".
